Machining a Steering Wheel
I machined the plate for the steering wheel of the Drexel Racing 2021 car with guidance from my dad. This was done on a 3 axis CNC mill in my dad’s shop. The CAM was done in GeoPath. The CAD for this part was done in SOLIDWORKS by another member of the Drexel FASE team.
The first step was to clamp down the sheet.
I used GeoPath to do the CAM for the part.
After clamping down the part I machined the pockets, holes and then finally the outer profile.
It's times like these that I'm really glad the CNC is fully enclosed.
Because I didn't have time to machine down the 1/4" plate (it was actually .260" as 1/4" stock generally is) the part is technically 10 thou too thick but given the way it is being mounted this will not pose any issues.
